The Foodies do Victoria part one.

The biggest dilemma for true Foodies is often where to go for dinner. This dilemma is worse when you are trying to plan a date night in a city that is not your home.  D and I are no different. Deciding where to sit  down with clean palates and empty stomachs is one of the great joys of being a foodie and every once in a while D and I go just a little overboard. It is one of my favourite Foodie adventures.

We set out in the morning for the few hour drive it takes us to get to Victoria . Checked into our hotel and headed out in search of food . It was the goal to see how many places we could get too in the one night we had . Our first stop was The Churchill a belly up to the bar pub with a huge range of beer. I am fairly new to the beer drinking world and dont know much about beer. I had a pale ale that was full of citrus and hops. Sharp on my tongue and cut thirst. I dont know my beers but I know I liked that.

We split a fish taco to have a look at how they do food. My opinion was that it was not terrible but should probably stick to drinks .

We headed over to the canoe on a recommendation from a friend. The place is huge and has a cool micro brew atmosphere. The dining area walls all surrounded with big mirrors on the walls that just add to the impression of size in this place. I ordered a Caesar and it was fairly good. I am a little picky on my Caesar, they are one of my fav cocktails but I am not fussy about a lot of stuff in it. I like heavy on the Worcestershire and lighter on the Tabasco. This one was just ok. Then I ordered Calamari and it was not good. No way to disguise it, just not good. Long strips of squid no rings and no tenticals, and overdone.

We finished our drinks and headed to the next recommendation we had received. It was COLD out so we walked quickly through the old brick buildings. Victoria is an old city as far as Canadian cities go and it is a beautiful one.

Our Next stop was The Drake . Loved this place . The house was full so we got a couple seats at the bar with a very short wait. We dug in to a few beers and started to go over the menu. It does not cease to amaze me how we can east when we decide to! I had a walnut coleslaw and an order of brioche toast with fig brie and apple spread. To die for! The coleslaw sounds that it would be boring but was so refreshing and crunchy on my palate after the sadness of the calamari. The toast was a perfect small bite rich and acidic with the apple and the brie. It was very good. I could have eaten a plate full.
We stayed at The Drake for a while letting our stomachs stretch enough to make room for the real dinner that we had planned.

Where could we possible go next!? Part two will tell all

Tidal Taco Shack, Qualicum Bay, BC.

This taco joint has been on the Vagrant Foodies “Must Try” list for some time now. We have been hearing good things for a couple years now.   We waited 45 minutes for tacos at a beach-side parking lot, on a hot day with no shade to be found.   To be fair, the wait is always long, and they have a sign posted right near the window stating the wait is usually 30 minutes to an hour. It’s a popular place.     It’s truly a shack. A tiny shed like structure with a dozen or so picnic tables out front of it. We stepped to the window and browsed the menu which consists or six or so tacos, all of which can be made into burritos or salads as well.   We decided on four tacos between the two of us: one prawn, one fish, and two beef.   When we got there all the tables were occupied, so we sipped Mexican soft drinks and sat on the rocks and watched the ocean surf. It’s quite a beautiful location.   Although it it a busy place, I was struck by how slowly they get food out. In that

Hank's *A Restaurant, Victoria BC

We had to use Google maps to find this place, and we were almost on top of the location when we noticed it. Hanks is a small (allegedly eighteen seats, but even that’s pretty tight) restaurant with a small sign and darkened windows. Hanks is hidden in plain sight right downtown Victoria on Douglas street.   When we walked in I was instantly delighted, I felt like I had discovered a private back room of an obscure watering hole. The thick aroma of deeply browned meat hit my nostrils immediately. The place looked completely full; that is to say there were a dozen or so patrons, mostly sitting on stools around the bar.  We inquired if it possible get seated, but I was thinking we would be turned away. Whiskey and I may have fit slotted in somewhere, but we were expecting a guest to join us as well.  The bubbly hostess/server told us they had one table near the back of the dining room, so she led us eleven steps towards the back where we were delighted see the largest table (of the th
